UVA Rolls Out New Comprehensive Sustainability Plan

UVA is looking to be more sustainable and has recently released a comprehensive plan detailing how they plan to achieve this goal. UVA hopes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2025, reduce energy use by 20% by 2020, and reduce potable water use by 25% by 2035.

According to Andrea Trimble, Sustainability Director at UVA, they are “looking at aggressively reducing greenhouse gas and energy on Grounds and saving money in the process”.

Virginia Out of March Madness

During one of the most dramatic and astonishing comebacks in Elite Eight history, Virginia is out of the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse defeated Virginia 68-62 in the Midwest Regional final and has become the first number 10 team to make the Final Four in NCAA Tournament history.

Syracuse, played a sluggish game for the first 30 minutes, and then magic must have appeared. Virginia soon was behind 6 points, and Syracuse’s defense combined with Virginia’s inability to switch up offense, allowed the Cavaliers’ to win unfortunately win the game. There’s always next year.

UVA Strongly Backs Student Research Projects

According to an article posted by UVA Today, 50 University of Virginia undergraduates will pursue 46 grant-funded research projects this summer. UVA’s Harrison Undergraduate Research program has awarded student research for 17 years. The UVA research program supports students who present detailed plans for projects that have been endorsed by a faculty member and allows these students to have a chance to receive up to $3,000 for their research.

Cornell’s First Woman President Named UVA’s 2016 Distinguished Alumna

Elizabeth Garett, Cornell University’s newest president has been selected by The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center of UVA to receive the University of Virginia’s 2016 Distinguished Alumna Award. Garett, who is a 1988 graduate of UVA School of Law will receive the award and speak on Grounds in April.

Garett’s nomination citied achievements including her record of legal scholarship and public service on issues of democracy, legislative process, tax reform and more.

UVA’s Distinguished Alumna Award was established in 1991 to honor alumnae whose contributions have brought about progress in a range of fields including economic development, civil rights, and medicine.
